GSMMC 2026

Juli was recently recognized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) through several social media posts from the 2026 Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp (GSMMC). The posts highlighted moments from the first week of the program, where participants worked in interdisciplinary teams to develop mathematical models around complex real-world problems.

At GSMMC, Juli collaborated on a SIRV infectious disease modeling project that brought together mathematical modeling, simulation design, and knowledge organization theory. The team explored how person-level susceptibility could be represented through structured dimensions such as age, comorbidity, social activity, geography, mobility, and vaccine acceptance.

The project drew from Ranganathan’s facet analysis to decompose the concept of a person into meaningful dimensions, while also using Gärdenfors’s conceptual spaces theory to consider how those dimensions can be weighted, compared, and interpreted within a simulation environment.

This recognition offered a meaningful opportunity to share the collaborative and interdisciplinary work taking place at GSMMC, as well as the value of bringing information science perspectives into applied mathematical modeling.
